The 149th Run of the Roses was won by Mage and jockey Javier Castellano. Owners OGMA investments, Ramiro Restrepo, Sterling Racing and CMNWLTH brought together trainer Gustavo Delgado and horse to take the track and cross the finish line with a time of 2:01:57.
It was a thrilling race that when witnessed in person brought chills to you for all the right reasons. The crowd embraced the moment fully at Churchill Downs that had a record-breaking attendance. Creating a memory for a lifetime, winners took home prizes from a smaller field than usual after five horses scratched with one including the favorite Forte. The payout for Mage was $32.42 to win, $14.58 to place, and $9.08 to show.
The colt earned $1,860,000 for the biggest win of his brief career. “He had a lot of heart,” Castellano told reporters from the winner’s circle. “He’s a little horse with a big heart.”
